Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has the weekend off after his team defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day in Week 17. On Sunday, Reid used his time off in the perfect way. During the "FOX NFL Kickoff" show, Reid recorded and sent a heartfelt message to a former player who is currently an analyst for FOX.
Former NFL QB Michael Vick was recently announced as the next head coach at Norfolk State, following in the footsteps of Deion Sanders, an NFL star taking a head-coaching job at the collegiate level, specifically at an HBCU. It's his first major foray into coaching after serving as OC for the Atlanta Legends AAF team. Vick, of course, played for Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2009-2012. He was named Comeback Player of the Year in 2010 after Reid gave him a second chance in the league.
The entire NFL on FOX crew congratulated Vick before showing Reid's message. Reid expressed his excitement for Vick, the student-athletes, and Norfolk State.
"Michael Vick, the new head coach of Norfolk State, man, is that school lucky to have you," Reid said. "You're going to do a great job. Those kids are fortunate to have you, probably most of all, to learn from, and you'll be awesome. You'll be great for the university. I love ya, and I know you're going to do a great job for them. So, all the best going forward. I'm now a Norfolk fan."
Reid still has a strong relationship in Vick's post-playing career. In fact, Reid gave Vick one of his first coaching opportunities. The former NFL star served as a Chiefs' coaching intern at training camp at St. Joseph, Missouri in 2017. He was also at training camp in 2022 and spoke to the team as a special guest ahead of Super Bowl LVIII's victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
Needless to say, Vick appreciated the message from his former head coach.
"Coach is going to make me cry," Vick said. "I love that man to death."
If Vick succeeds at the collegiate level, he may eventually join Reid's coaching staff in Kansas City.
