The Kansas City Chiefs have a lot riding on the offensive line during the 2025 NFL season with new additions such as Josh Simmons & Jaylon Moore, in addition to a position switch for Kingsley Suamataia.
As training camp got underway on Tuesday, July 22, one veteran offensive lineman revealed that Andy Heck and Corey Matthaei have some extra help with coaching at Missouri Western State University. During OTAs and mandatory minicamp, it was former Chiefs RT Mitchell Schwartz, but now they've got another former player and a veteran offensive line coach with practically 30 years of NFL experience helping the staff.
"We have Juan Castillo and Cam Erving today, helping us out as well," Chiefs RG Trey Smith revealed to reporters.
It was later revealed by Chiefs team reporter Matt McMullen that Castillo and Erving are among the 10 coaches participating in training camp via the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship.

It appears that another former Chiefs offensive lineman, Cam Erving, will try his hand at coaching. The Chiefs traded a Day 3 pick for Erving ahead of the 2017 NFL season, prying him from the Cleveland Browns, who selected him in Round 1 of the 2015 NFL Draft. He'd sign a two-year contract extension with the team and become one of the team's most reliable backup offensive linemen, appearing in 40 games and starting 25 across three seasons. When he wasn't filling in as a spot starter on the offensive line, Erving became known as the team's ultimate hype man, always getting animated and hyping his teammates up from the sidelines. He's got an infectious type of energy that was always revered by his teammates and should be welcomed if he's still participating during the dog days of training camp.
On the other hand, Juan Castillo is a veteran offensive line coach who spent the 1995-2012 NFL seasons as an offensive assistant, tight ends coach, offensive line coach, and defensive coordinator under Andy Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles. He's since spent time with the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, and Washington Commanders in various roles. He served as an offensive line coach for the UCLA Bruins in 2024 and currently works as an offensive assistant for the Michigan Wolverines. His experience in the NFL, particularly with Coach Reid, makes him a worthy candidate to help shape the fundamentals of this new group of first- and second-year offensive linemen in Kansas City.
Castillo and Erving will be welcome additions for however long they're around. The Chiefs need all the voices and input they can get to improve year-over-year along the offensive line. They've made the financial and draft investments, but it's now clear that they're investing everything they possibly can to ensure this group reaches its potential in 2025.
