The New Orleans Saints running back room is one where depth needs to prove itself. Alvin Kamara remains one of the best running backs in football. His workload last season, though, was simply too heavy. New Orleans needs to keep him fresh and having a reliable second and third option is a major piece to that.

Rookei Devin Neal could play a role in year one, but he’s dealing with a brand new hurdle after the latest news around training camp.

Rookie RB Devin Neal dealing with hamstring injury

According to reports, Saints rookie running back Devin Neal suffered a hamstring injury. He’s expected to miss a couple weeks. That takes him out of contention for snaps in this weekend’s preseason game, as well as probably their second one, too.

This will only make the transition to the pros tougher for Neal. He’s competing with a plethora of bodies for a depth role in the RB room, behind Kamara. Kendre Miller is a talented piece, but he’s got to prove he can stay healthy and reliable for New Orleans. Veterans Cam Akers, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and Velus Jones Jr. are also in the mix.

UDFA signing Marcus Yarns is still a backup option, too. The Saints could be without Taysom Hill for part of this season as well, only dampening the potential upside of their running attack under new head coach Kellen Moore.

Neal needs to come back strong off this injury and prove himself late in the preseason in order to secure a roster spot. I’m intrigued to see if he can do so. He was a nice value add on day three of this year’s draft.

Alvin Kamara will not play in the team’s first preseason game this weekend. Kellen Moore announced that all other healthy RBs will be available for that matchup. With the Neal injury, it would not shock me if the Saints add another free agent RB option before the preseason concludes, either.
