Bills bring in emergency help to the roster as injuries mount just days before first preseason game
The Buffalo Bills brought in some emergency reinforcements ahead of their first preseason matchup.
The Buffalo Bills are battling their fair share of injuries. With Khalil Shakir confirmed to be out until Week 1 of the regular season, Maxwell Hairston’s knee injury, among countless others, things aren’t looking fantastic at One Bills Drive.
Now, at this point in the season, we aren’t hitting the panic button. However, the amount of injuries, along with some key players missing these important reps, is enough to have us slightly concerned.
This portion of training camp is imperative for these young guys to build chemistry, along with the new additions, and to get reps in. With the injuries, the team hasn’t been able to do that as much as they’d hope to.
While it was hilarious, it was also a bit worrying when K Tyler Bass was out with a pelvis injury and RB Ray Davis showed up to the Red and Blue scrimmage to kick some field goals. It was more than exciting, and Davis nailed a few 25+ yard field goals, which went viral, but that can’t be the case when the regular season rolls around.
The Buffalo Bills had previously released their unofficial depth chart, which had Davis as the backup kicker. Again, a funny concept, but something the team thought they’d need to address with an emergency roster move just one day before the first preseason matchup against the New York Giants.
The key point is that it is “unofficial,” so take everything on the depth chart with a grain of salt.
Despite not practicing, it doesn’t mean the team wasn’t working. Sal Capaccio reported that the Bills have signed K Caden Davis.
With Bass out and presumably unavailable to kick tomorrow, they’re going to need those reps, and for Ray Davis to focus more on running the football than kicking field goals or extra points.
Davis is an undrafted K who played for Texas A&M from 2019-2022 before transferring to Ole Miss in where he played from 2023 to 2024. Davis was named a second-team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) selection by College Football Network. When he returned for his final season in 2024, he was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, which is given to the best kicker nationally.
While signing with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in May this year, he was waived on July 29 before ultimately signing with the Buffalo Bills today. In a corresponding move, the team released WR Kelly Akharaiyi.
We won’t have to wait long to see Caden Davis in action as the Bills are set to take on the New York Giants in their first preseason matchup.
Football is (almost) back. Get pumped, Bills Mafia.
