Goal No. 1 for every team in the preseason is to escape with as few injuries as possible. Unfortunately for the Kansas City Chiefs, they’ve already got their first season-ending injury after their Week 1 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

With under two minutes left to play in the second quarter, Chiefs veteran safety Deon Bush suffered a non-contact injury. He was on the ground, frustrated and seemingly writhing in pain. His defensive teammates, plus Andy Reid and even starting QB Patrick Mahomes, came out on the field to check on him, which is never a good sign.

Bush was eventually carted off the field and promptly ruled out with an Achilles injury.

Andy Reid confirmed to reporters after the game that Bush suffered a torn left Achilles.

“We’ll double-check, but I think we’re looking at surgery,” Reid said, via KC Star reporter Sam McDowell. “It’s too bad, because he’s really been playing well. Great kid, too.”

This means that Bush will head to the season-ending injured reserve list.

A nine-year veteran and former fourth-round pick by the Chicago Bears in the 2016 NFL Draft, Bush was entering his fourth season with Kansas City. He’s appeared in 31 combined regular-season and postseason games during the past three seasons with the Chiefs. Despite spending a good chunk of time on the practice squad, Bush has become one of the team’s most valuable depth pieces at the safety position. Fans will remember when he was elevated to the 53-man roster during the 2023 AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens, notching a fourth-quarter red zone interception that helped ice the game.

Needless to say, the Chiefs are going to miss having a veteran like this that they can rely upon if they run into some in-season attrition at the safety position. It could open up an opportunity for a player like Chris Roland-Wallace to take on a more outsized role at the safety position for Kansas City.
