Saints have the perfect opportunity to trade Isaiah Foskey if they can convince one specific AFC team that they can fix him

Match made in heaven? Maybe not.

New Orleans Saints fan have grown weary with the struggles of edge rusher Isaiah Foskey since his selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Saints picked him in the second round with the 40th overall pick. Foskey has struggled to see any playing time on defense, and that has not changed with a scheme change under the new coaching staff for New Orleans. His reps during the preseason have not been impressive, leading to him being on the roster bubble as of now.

The Saints may try to trade Foskey, but does one particular landing spot stand out for him? That’s a concept worth keeping an eye on and visiting.

Saints can reunite Foskey with college coach

Fossey’s time at Notre Dame was filled with production. His college defensive coordinator? Al Golden – the current DC for the Cincinnati Bengals. Reuniting Foskey with the coach that saw him wreak havoc on quarterbacks during his collegiate days could be the perfect move for the player and open up a door for another player to make the roster over him for the Saints.

For comparison on the stat sheet between [Fadil] Diggs and Foskey, the rookie has one sack in one game with New Orleans. Foskey has totaled just 1.5 sacks in 32 games with the Saints. He’s simply been unable to get on the field whatsoever on defense. Meanwhile, Diggs has had some notable standout days during training camp and played well in his first NFL game action. That’s not easy. A to Z Sports

Getting even a late day three draft pick for the edge rusher would probably feel like a victory for the Saints. This sort of deal with the Bengals feels like it makes a ton of sense, right? Maybe not, according to John Sheeran, A to Z’s own for the Bengals.

Why the Bengals may pass on this deal for Foskey

There are a few positions that deserve extra attention on the Bengals’ roster right now such as safety and guard due to injuries and strength of talent, respectively, but I don’t see defensive end as part of that. If Shemar Stewart and Trey Hendrickson were both not practicing and the former, specificially, was really falling behind in terms of practice time and development, I could see a trade for someone like Foskey making sense. But Stewart has made great strides already and is slowly moving up the depth chart, and Hendrickson is a known commodity who’s expected to be signed prior to the regular season. I wouldn’t say it’s worth the Bengals giving away a draft pick for someone who may not make the roster, regardless of his history with Golden.John Sheeran, A to Z Sports

This argument makes plenty of sense as well. Foskey probably wouldn’t completely rekindle his impressive performances from college, as he’s simply never shown a glimpse of doing that with New Orleans so far. Taking the swing and spending any sort of draft capital may just be a waste for Cincy if they believe their depth is sufficient at the position.
