‘We’re getting short on time’ – Sean McDermott lays it all out with a concerning update on injury-riddled rising star
Sean McDermott left nothing to the imagination.
Let’s start with the good news first. Both starting safeties in Cole Bishop and Taylor Rapp were limited but did participate in practice this afternoon. That in it of itself is a huge win for the organization and its fans with huge expectations for the team heading into the regular season.
However, before practice, Sean McDermott had a blunt assessment of where Bishop stands and how his limited availability has hurt his progress. McDermott said it, “remains to be seen what he’s truly able to do for us.” Bishop, as Alex Brasky reported, has missed mandatory minicamp and 5 out of 12 camp practices due to injury. Followed up with a, “we’re getting short on time.”
McDermott began, “Focusing on Taylor (Rapp) and Cole (Bishop). You know that continuity together is important. Cole’s been out there, T Rapp has been out there quite a bit just over the last week or so. But Cole’s the one who’s missed quite a bit of time.”
Sean McDermott’s blunt assessment of Bishop
Bishop battled injuries throughout his rookie season that started during training camp. Now, in his second season, Bishop needs to get these important reps in to build the continuity, like McDermott mentioned during his presser. Back-to-back seasons without these important reps are detrimental to his long-term success at the position.
He continued, “Again, just like last year. So, it remains to be seen what he’s truly able to do for us, and that’s a big position for us, right? Like I mentioned, numerous times over, the continuity between the two of them and pairing up is kinda like the Batman and Robin piece. It’s just experiencing things together. How did you see it? How did I see it? Being in the film room together, it’s huge.”
That’s when the head coach dropped the hammer. His blunt assessment of where they are currently is already turning heads: “We’re getting short on time.”
Bills Mafia was blessed with elite safety play
The team is doing its best to navigate the injuries to both starting safeties, and it’s new water for the organization and its fanbase. Bills Mafia remembers all too well the years with Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde in the backfield. We were spoiled with elite safety play and didn’t need to worry about the position.
While Hyde and Poyer both battled their fair share of injuries, the next-man-up mentality always worked with the thought being that one day, one or both would be back and healthy, and they’d once again have one of the premier safety tandems in the NFL.
For now, Bishop has his work cut out for him. McDermott is expressing how important it is for him to be on the field with Rapp, while bringing up his previous injuries and even saying that we’re “getting short on time,” things aren’t looking fantastic.
All eyes are going to be on Buffalo as they continue to navigate injuries on both sides of the football. Getting Bishop back and healthy and ready to compete is an important first step, and it doesn’t look like he’s got a whole lot of time to do it.
