NFL officials are going to be watching Jameson Williams and Lions players closely in 2025
The celebrations are going to have eyes on them
The Divisional round did not go very well for the Detroit Lions. They lost that game and ended their season earlier than anyone wanted them to. There was one fun thing that happened in that game, though. Lions receiver Jameson Williams had a big 61-yard end-around touchdown and then threw this celebration out there.
The guy who made this tweet is right, Williams was fined by the NFL. They fined him $ 23,325 for what they called an obscene gesture. It was his second instance of the year. Earlier in the season, Williams recreated the infamous Marshawn Lynch celebration, where he grabbed himself while jumping into the end zone. Williams was fined $19,697 for that one.
On Wednesday, the Lions had NFL official Adrian Hill and his team at practice to explain some of the new rules the NFL will be enforcing in the 2025 season. One of those is one that we’ve already heard a little about back in April. That’s the NFL cracking down on obscene or violent gestures during celebrations. The gestures that were mostly brought up were the nose wipe and anything that was gun-like. They also don’t want players stepping over players like the infamous Allen Iverson-Tyrone Lue moment from the 2001 NBA finals.
Hill also discussed obscene gestures in relation to the famous Key and Peele skit featuring the pumps. Those types of things, or anything deemed obscene, would have extra scrutiny on them this year. With that comes a 15-yard penalty. If it happens in between the end zones, that’s a 15-yard loss for the Lions offense. If it happens after a touchdown, that’s 15 extra yards off the return for the opposition. Either way is bad, but losing 15 yards is obviously worse.
Jameson Williams and the Lions aren’t the only ones that the NFL is keeping a close eye on. It’s going to be a league-wide mandate, and they are very serious about it. We’ll see what happens going forward. It is a little concerning that Williams had something of a questionable celebration during the Lions’ joint practice with the Dolphins on Wednesday.
