Latest development around former Ohio State star Quinshon Judkins could have big ramifications for when he makes Browns debut
Big news around the former Ohio State star and Ole Miss transfer.
Due to an ongoing legal situation, former Ohio State star RB Quinshon Judkins still has yet to sign his rookie contract with the Cleveland Browns.
Recent developments have started to suggest that this situation may be nearing a resolution. The most recent update confirms this, and things should start to pick up between Judkins and the Browns with the announcement that he will not face any formal charges. He can now begin the steps towards rejoining the team and hopefully signing on the dotted line ahead of his rookie season.
No formal charges are coming for Former Ohio State RB Quinshon Judkins
Judkins was only with the Buckeyes one year, but played a pivotal role in helping the team win the National Championship. He rushed for 1,060 yards and 14 touchdowns on just 194 carries. He averaged an impressive 5.5 yards per carry and showed enough to be drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Browns. He stays in Ohio, and with this recent development, should be in line to make his NFL debut during his rookie season after all. The next step will be signing his rookie contract, after which he will have to wait and see if the NFL elects to impose a suspension due to the incident. But for now, this seems like a significant step towards Judkins joining fellow Buckeyes RB TreVeyon Henderson in trying to be the next great NFL RBs that spent time at Ohio State.
What this means for the Browns
The Browns likely won’t waste any time getting Judkins signed to his four-year rookie contract. Cleveland has been operating with Jerome Ford and rookie Dylan Sampson as their two main running backs during training camp. Ford dealt with a minor injury earlier in camp, which opened the door for multiple backs, including Armani Marshall, Trayveon Williams, and Toa Taua. Cleveland’s plan is for Judkins to become their starting running back at some point this season once he’s ready, and this move starts that process.
If Judkins isn’t suspended — and he may not be — getting him up to speed for the season now becomes a priority. He’s already missed multiple weeks of training camp, and how prepared he has stayed while away will be revealed once he returns. For a Browns offense that must improve on the ground this season, getting back to the roots of Kevin Stefanski’s scheme, Judkins should help make that happen.
Judkins is a running back who doesn’t need to come off the field, as he’s a willing pass blocker and can contribute as a receiver. It will be interesting to see how the Browns utilize their two rookies.
