Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Kyle McCord had no choice but to have a solid outing against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday as he battles Dorian Thompson-Robinson for the QB3 job.

And he did not disappoint.

In the first half of the game, McCord connected with wide receiver Ainias Smith for a nine-yard touchdown pass.

He finished the day completing 8 of 16 pass attempts for 56 yards and a touchdown before Thompson-Robinson replaced him in the Eagles’ 22-13 preseason loss to Cleveland.

“Going into the week, watching their game against Carolina, and then a couple of joint practices,” McCord told reporters of how he prepared for this week’s matchup. “Then we knew. Third down in the red zone and high alert for zero. Got the look that we wanted, and at the end of the day, Ainias did a really good job of winning right away off the ball. And then you know you’re going to be one short in protection, so it’s all about getting the ball out on time. Like I said earlier, I think that’s how you show toughness as a quarterback.”

McCord has been taking advantage of every rep he gets at training camp, but it’s been a close battle between him and Dorian-Thompson. However, Saturday’s performance definitely made up for the interception he threw last week against the Cincinnati Bengals.

McCord, a Philly native, takes the jump to the NFL following an impressive final season at Syracuse, topping the FBS with 4,779 passing yards and 34 touchdowns.

He will have one more preseason game to prove he deserves a spot on the Eagles’ 53-man roster when they face the New York Jets next Friday night.
