Chiefs LT Josh Simmons reveals point of emphasis he has been focusing on throughout training camp and preseason
Getting better each day.
Left tackle Josh Simmons was the darling of Chiefs training camp this year.
Kansas City selected him in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft despite concerns over a torn patellar tendon injury that he sustained back in October at Ohio State. The risk has seemingly paid off as Simmons locked down the starting LT job right off the bat and has been impressive throughout camp and the preseason.
As good as Simmons may become, he still has plenty of developing to do. Part of that is getting comfortable with his stance. While speaking to the media on Monday, Simmons said he was focusing on his technique during last week’s preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.
“Coach (Offensive line coach Andy Heck) Heck will give me everything I need to know, but for me, I try to go technique,” Simmons said. “Then just communicating. Try to be over communicative, that way we’re going the right direction.”
Stance technique is obviously crucial, and is something offensive lineman have to constantly concentrate on. Simmons discussed one thing in particular with his stance that he is putting a point of emphasis on.
“It’s tipping a lot of defenses, kind of kicking my foot back there,” Simmons said. “Nobody, maybe except Joe Thomas, can run block out of that. So it’s been something that I’ve been working on a lot, just to kind of square it up and be more universal in my stance. We’re working on it in the pass sets. These guys are a little faster than in college, but it’ll be fixed for sure.”
Simmons will have one more preseason game to work on things before things get real in the Chiefs’ regular season opener against the Chargers on September 5. Los Angeles will certainly want to put the rookie to the test right out of the gate. Simmons will undergo a trial by fire as he faces many daunting pass rushes throughout the first month of the regular season.
