Colts lose another promising rookie to a season ending injury after he had a strong showing in his first NFL training camp
Colts rookie Hunter Wohler is out for the season
The Indianapolis Colts made a move to improve their secondary depth this week by signing veteran CB Xavien Howard. This helped the team, but it appears to be coming at the cost of losing another member of their 2025 NFL Draft class.
The team announced that they are placing rookie safety Hunter Wohler on IR after suffering a foot injury that ended his day early during their second preseason game.
Colts place 2025 7th round pick Hunter Wohler on IR

It may have only been training camp and the preseason, but the Colts’ seventh-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, Hunter Wohler, was turning heads on the field. He was already outplaying his draft position and, due to an injury to Nick Cross, had been recording reps with the starters in practice. His spot on the Colts‘ 53‘ 53-man roster looked locked up, and it seemed that he was progressing towards having a bigger role than many expected as a rookie. Now he sees his rookie season end before it can even begin and will look towards 2026 and try to prove to the Colts yet again that he can be a difference maker for their football team.
There was confusion early on after being drafted on what position Wohler would play for the Colts. Was he an LB or an S? In training camp, he demonstrated that it doesn’t matter where he plays; he was ready to make plays. Losing a seventh-round rookie isn’t going to force most teams to lose sleep, but for the Colts, this makes their safety depth even more uncertain. After Cross returns to the lineup behind him and Cam Bynum, the team has Rodney Thomas, Daniel Scott, and UDFAs Trey Washington and Ladarius Tennison. Not much to write home about with that group, which makes you think maybe they could think about adding a player either through free agency or maybe on the initial waiver wire after cut-down day.
