On Friday, St. Christopher’s School (Va.) interior offensive lineman Darius Gray announced his commitment to the South Carolina Gamecocks – telling Ohio State, Clemson, and Tennessee “thanks, but no thanks”.

Gray is the No. 16 overall prospect in the country, the No. 1 overall interior offensive lineman prospect, and Virginia’s top-ranked recruit.

“The reason why I picked South Carolina was because of being able to join something that is up-trending, ” Gray said. “They’re a school that has constantly grown over the years and just being part of the new recruits coming in, and the guys that are already there, they have everything they need and I am just there to give them my little push and give everything I have.

“Beamer’s approach was the difference-maker,” added the source. “He and the staff made it clear that they were going to take care of Darius, treat him like family, and make sure that he was in a great spot for the next couple of years.

The 6-foot-3, 285 pound prospect expound on his relationship with Shane Beamer.

“You wouldn’t know if you didn’t pay attention to football, but he’s one of the coolest, most humble guys I’ve met in my life,” Gray told 247Sports. “Just to have a head coach like that, to (fight) for his players no matter what the situation is, that means everything.

“It was all about Shane Beamer,” one source told 247Sports’ Tom Loy. “When you look at how he handled Darius’ recruitment, the personal touch and approach he took, especially when dealing with his mother, that was a huge factor that swung things in favor of the Gamecocks.

“Coach Beamer, he’s great,” Gray said. “To be able to come in to the head coaching job and change the program quickly, that’s huge.

247Sports’ director of scouting Andrew Ivins really likes what Darius Gray brings to the table.

“Athletic offensive lineman with a dense build that has the foot quickness to lead the way on long pulls or counters and the horsepower to hold the line of scrimmage or change it. Ended up being one of the biggest surprises of the 2025 Navy All-American Bowl as he arrived with 34-inch arms and then was able to anchor all week against much older and larger defenders. Relentless energy allows him to not only be a plus finisher in the run game, but also readjust and recover in pass sets. Tends to punch with authority and frequently has the upper and lower halves dancing to the same tune. Has what it takes to certainly handle one of the corners on Saturdays, but combination of brute force and rare movement patterns suggest that he could emerge as a cheat code of a guard in a zone-blocking scheme. Might need a developmental year or two to find his bearings as he levels up in competition and adjusts to the speed of the college game, but profiles as someone that has what it takes to blossom into an early-round NFL Draft pick with his basketball background and full-time, two-way snaps at the prep level.”
