Notre Dame football and its 2028 quarterback recruiting search just hit a wall.

Four-star Princeton (NJ) Hun School quarterback Lukas Prock committed to the Indiana Hoosiers this week, leaving the Fighting Irish with zero uncommitted quarterback offers on the table. For a program that has recruited the position at an elite level under head coach Marcus Freeman, this is an unusual and uncomfortable position, but a surmountable one.

Prock is a legitimate talent. The 6-2, 195-pound signal caller is rated as the No. 69 overall player, the No. 6 quarterback, and the No. 3 player from the state of New Jersey on the 247Sports Composite rankings for the 2028 recruiting class.

His offer sheet reflected that status. Some of his top offers outside of Indiana and Notre Dame included Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Oregon, Nebraska, Florida State, Florida, Syracuse, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Washington, Arkansas, Auburn, Boston College, Cincinnati, Colorado, Duke, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Northwestern, and Rutgers, among several others.

While Prock is mostly a pocket-centric quarterback, he does have a nice ability to work in and out of structure.

He is coming off a dynamic junior season for Hun School, where he completed 226 of 309 passes for 4,330 yards and 41 touchdown passes. Prock added another touchdown on the ground while averaging over 10 yards per carry and throwing just seven interceptions. The production speaks for itself, and Indiana is getting a talented player.

Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Indiana were viewed as the teams to know heading into Prock’s junior season. The Hoosiers won that battle, leaving the Irish in a difficult spot.

How Notre Dame got here

The Notre Dame 2028 quarterback recruiting process has been a strange one, to say the least. The Fighting Irish held a commitment from New Jersey signal caller Trey Tagliaferri several weeks ago, but after just six days, he opted to decommit. Tagliaferri eventually ended up with Oklahoma after leveraging the Sooners for what he believed was a better opportunity.

After that decision, talented Alabama quarterback Kingston Preyear quickly committed to Alabama, and Neimann Lawrence also committed to Texas. Notre Dame was down to a single signal caller with an offer on the table, and that was Prock. The Irish did seem to gain some traction after the initial break in communication following the Tagliaferri situation, but it was not enough in the end.

Where Notre Dame goes from here

With Prock now off the board, Notre Dame has a complete reset at the quarterback position in the 2028 class. There are no uncommitted quarterback offers currently on the table.

From everything I have gathered, the Fighting Irish would be best served to go into the 2026 season and evaluate some quarterbacks during their junior campaigns. Whether that means identifying potential flip targets or finding players who make a massive rise during their junior seasons, patience is the right approach here.

Notre Dame, with how well the program has recruited quarterbacks over the years, can afford to take its time with this decision. There is no reason to jump the gun on a quarterback the staff doesn’t love. The track record is strong enough to trust the process, even when the board looks empty right now.
