The Philadelphia Eagles had rookie quarterback Kyle McCord play the entirety of Friday night’s preseason finale win over the New York Jets.

This was a rather different approach than expected after the Eagles had McCord and Dorian Thompson-Robinson split the reps in the team’s second preseason game against the Cleveland Browns.

After the Eagles barely held off the Jets, 19-17, head coach Nick Sirianni explained why they chose to play McCord for the whole game.

“We talked about that, getting him a full game right there,” Sirianni said. “DTR’s got a lot of tape out there and we’ve seen him play a lot as well. But I just thought we needed a lot more reps there for Kyle for the evaluation process.”

While the Eagles pulled off a win, McCord didn’t look too sharp after completing just 15 of 35 passes for 136 yards and an interception.

“He had some good plays and he had some missed opportunities,” Sirianni said when asked how he thought McCord performed. “We’ll have to watch the tape, but he did some nice things, ran the show well, and played some good situational football that helped us get some points.”

The good news is that the Eagles already have a clear backup in Tanner McKee, so who sticks around between McCord and Thompson-Robinson will re-sign to the practice squad as the team’s emergency No. 3 backup.

If we’re being honest, it doesn’t look like either deserve the spot, though Thompson-Robinson makes more sense if we’re basing things on experience. But even if the Eagles decided that neither is a good fit, then they could cut both and look at the waivers around the league come cutdown day.

The waiting and guessing game is almost over. By Tuesday, August 26, at 4 p.m. ET, the Eagles and all 31 other NFL teams must trim their rosters down to 53 players.
