The Indianapolis Colts have already started cutting their roster down to 53 players ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. They also chose to add a player by trading for CB Mekhi Blackmon from the Minnesota Vikings.

This shakes up the expected group at cornerback to make the team’s 53-man roster, so let’s break down what this move means for the Colts and roster-fringe players at the position.

How will the Colts handle CB on their initial 53-man roster?

After the Colts finished their final preseason game, I released my prediction for who would make their 53-man roster. CB was one of the tougher spots to predict, with three players battling for what seems to be one roster spot. Those players are Samuel Womack, Chris Lammons, and the player I gave the job to, UDFA Johnathan Edwards.

Original prediction:
1. Charvarius Ward
2. Kenny Moore II
3. Xavien Howard
4. Jaylon Jones
5. Juju Brents
6. Johnathan Edwards

This trade changes things, though. Blackmon is now a lock for the 53-man roster, taking over that CB6 spot. So does that mean they are kicking Womack, Lammons, and Edwards to the curb, or will they plan to keep seven? I’ve gone back and forth about this, but I think they will keep seven. The more defensive backs the better in Lou Anarumo’s scheme, so I believe this trade leads the Colts to go thinner at linebacker and/or potentially on the offensive line on their initial 53-man roster to keep their preferred CBs off the opening waiver wire. Which means, yet again, the last spot comes down to the same three players, and I will stick with my gut and say the Colts want to bet on Edwards’ upside and reward the UDFA who had a great training camp and preseason.

New prediction:
1. Charvarius Ward
2. Kenny Moore II
3. Xavien Howard
4. Jaylon Jones
5. Juju Brents
6. Mekhi Blackmon
7. Johnathan Edwards
