The Colts just flipped the script on the trade deadline chatter and locked in a young breakout player for the long haul
Amid the ongoing fire sale, the Indianapolis Colts just locked in one of their brightest young pieces on a new extension.
Just when you think you know how a story is going to play out in the NFL, a curveball gets thrown and turns the script upside down. That’s exactly what the Indianapolis Colts just did with their ongoing fire sale, as they’ve parlayed their recent trade-offs with a new $35 million dollar contract extension for one of their possible trade candidates. Surprise!
The report comes out a week after Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner were shipped out of town. And it keeps young breakout defender Adetomiwa Adebawore in Indianapolis for the next several seasons.
Colts defensive lineman Adetomiwa Adebawore goes from trade deadline target to contract extension
Credit to interim general manager Ed Dodds, who is doing a notable job of shaking up the roster ahead of the deadline. The Colts need as many long-term resources as they can possibly get as they presumably set off on a new build. Most folks associate that with draft picks. But players like Adebawore also qualify.
The former 110th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Adebawore is just 25 years of age and is now under contract with the Indianapolis Colts for two more new seasons of play. Well done. Most successful builds start in the trenches. And for Adebawore, who has four sacks thus far this season, that equates to a pay day. The freed up funds from moving Nelson and Buckner likely helped.
But this move is a notable one because of Dodds’ status. It’d be one thing to sell with an established general manager running the deadline. But Dodds is here on an interim basis and just got the green light to sign away up to $35 million in new payroll for the young defensive lineman. That is…unusual. It does not guarantee that Dodds is going to seize the job without the interim title. But I do think it overwhelmingly helps his candidacy to know that he’s being entrusted with not just trades. But also extensions.
