Lions make two big early morning moves, Tim Patrick has been traded and they signed a safety with ties to Lions coaching staff
The Lions got up early today
Wake up, everyone! The Detroit Lions are already working this morning. They made two separate moves that might appear to be tied together, but they’re not. The first one is that the Lions have traded receiver Tim Patrick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2026 sixth-round pick.
This one just felt like it was coming. Third-round pick Isaac TeSlaa has been moving up the depth chart since the moment he arrived, and there was no stopping him from taking the WR3 role from Patrick. Since the Lions have him and will theoretically have Jackson Meeks back in the fold soon, Patrick has become somewhat redundant. In Jacksonville, he’ll have a better chance to play and make a difference.
With that said, he is still one of the best moves Brad Holmes ever made because Patrick was claimed at the last second last year and turned into a big part of Detroit’s offense. It made everyone who was super concerned about receiver depth, including me, look a little silly. Now, onto the next move.
Lions Sign Safety Daniel Thomas From Jaguars
As I mentioned, it appears that these moves are connected, but they’re not. Thomas was not a part of this trade. The Jaguars released him on Monday. It’s just a coincidence. Thomas is coming off five seasons with the Jaguars. Two of which were spent with Lions defensive backs coach Deshea Townsend.
The former fifth-round pick has mostly been a special teams player, and that’s exactly what the Lions need from their fourth safety if he is joining the 53-man roster and not the practice squad. This is not fully known at this time.
Thomas has been a particularly good special teams player during the last five years, and he’s similar to Patrick O’Connor in that sense. This is what’s keeping him on rosters. He’s great at tackling and has a nose for the ball. Lions special teams coordinator Dave Fipp will love this one.
