3 bold predictions for the Sooners defense in 2025: Second-string defender leads team in certain statistical category by years end
The Oklahoma Sooners defense can be so special in 2025.
It’s bold prediction season, which means we are about to predict some things that likely won’t happen. But when you have a unit like this in the SEC, anything can happen. This will be a huge year for the Sooners’ defense, and three players in particular could do some things this season that would be considered bold.
3 Bold Predictions for Sooners Defense in 2025
True Freshman CB Courtland Guillory will be on an All-SEC Freshman team
Coming into the offseason, Guillory was kind of looked at as just another freshman, a player who would play when injuries happened or when the Sooners were blowing another team out. That’s not the case at all – he has that dog in him, as coach Brent Venables says. Guillory has put on some muscle and weight since his senior year, so he now looks like an SEC cornerback who has been playing in the conference for a few years.
Guillory has been one of the standouts of fall camp, maybe the biggest standout, seeing how he made some big-time play almost every day of practice. He’s done so well that he has found himself as a co-starter on the Sooners’ initial two-deep depth chart. If he becomes a starter, or a guy that plays a ton of snaps every single game, it’s clear that he could end up on an All-SEC Freshman team. Guillory is a physical, handsy CB with great man coverage skills. If his freshman year goes well, we could be talking about him as a potential draft pick by the time the draft rolls around in a few years.
Sammy Omosigho will lead the team in tackle for loss
This one may seem crazy because Sammy Omosigho is a backup behind Kobie McKinzie, but I see a way where Omosigho could play more than the usual backup linebacker. The Sooners must find ways to get him on the field because he’s an absolute animal. So much so that last year, as a sophomore, he was actually top-five in tackles for a loss.
He’s had a big-time summer and fall camp, and from what we know about Omosigho, he will make the most of every single time he gets on the field. You find him in the backfield from shooting gaps at the LB spot way too often for him not to get a ton of TFLs. He’s only gotten better, and he’s healthy, so, yeah, he can definitely lead the team in that stat.
Marvin Jones Jr. gets 10 sacks in 2025
This might be the craziest. Marvin Jones Jr. has six career sacks in three years, including four sacks last year. But, hear me out. This is one of the best defensive lines in the country, if not the best. You have a guy in R Mason Thomas, who will be a first-round pick, getting ready for his first NFL season in a year from now. You have insane depth at the defensive tackle spots to shuffle through so that the defensive line is always fresh. Then, you have Jones Jr. on the edge, getting to the QB.
With Thomas opposite of him, teams will spend a lot of time trying to make sure he doesn’t get home to the quarterback, whether that’s sliding protections, double-teaming him, or throwing in chip blocks. That will only make things easier on Jones Jr. His four sacks last year came while he was on a terrible, two-win Florida State team. This year, we could see him at his best.
