The Cleveland Browns have finalized their 53-man roster and added two players off waivers to strengthen the team. With preseason and training camp now behind them, the focus shifts to the regular season, which kicks off next week.

Another key step at the end of the preseason is filling out the practice squad. Like every other team around the league, Cleveland has already begun that process.

This article will be updated as practice squad additions are announced.

Understanding the Practice Squad

The NFL expanded practice squads during the COVID-19 pandemic and chose to keep several of those adjustments in place. Teams are now permitted to carry 16 players: 10 with no more than two accrued seasons, and six with no eligibility restrictions. Additionally, the league allows a 17th player with a roster exemption through the International Pathway Program.

During the season, teams can temporarily elevate practice squad players for gameday. Each player may be elevated up to three times for the same team without being added to the 53-man active roster. After the game, they automatically revert back to the practice squad. In the postseason, the rules loosen—there’s no individual limit on elevations, though each team can still elevate only two players per game.

Players on a practice squad can be signed by other teams, but only if they are placed directly on that team’s 53-man roster. They cannot be moved from one practice squad to another.
