The Buffalo Bills have brought back safety Jordan Poyer to be on the team’s practice squad. Less than 24 hours after the announcement was made, Poyer was back on the field in Buffalo for the first time in over a year. He spent the previous season in Miami but is beyond grateful to be back in Western New York. With it, Poyer was asked about what’s different this time around and what his feelings are about the team’s coach, Sean McDermott. Needless to say, Poyer is a fan of the work Sean has done.

“He’s adapted, he’s evolved, he’s grown, he’s learned. He’s made some mistakes and learned from them and continued to grow [. . .] There’s a reason people want to come back here and Sean is a big part of that [. . .] He’s a player’s coach.”

The 34-year-old veteran safety rejoined the organization on a one-year deal, and it very well may be his last contract in the NFL. Fully realizing the moment, Poyer was candid about what his hopes are heading into the season and beyond. When asked about what brought him back, it was all love.

“This is where my heart is [. . .]This is home. This is where I want to be [. . .] This is where I want to retire.”

Poyer was released in March 2024 in a slew of moves for the team to save some cap space. Along with Poyer were Mitch Morse, Tre’Davious White (designated as a post-June 1 release that year), Siran Neal, and Deonte Hardy. It was a regime change, with the older veteran players heading out the door in favor of the new young guys. That, and the team had to get creative with plenty of superstars due for a payday. Nevertheless, it was a difficult time for fans and players alike as multiple fan favorites and cornerstones of the team’s success were no longer with the organization.

Poyer’s road back to Buffalo was difficult

After being released by the team, Poyer joined the Miami Dolphins on a one-year deal. Poyer didn’t mince words when asked about his stint with the AFC East rival, saying it was a “really tough year.”

An emotional return for Poyer, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. It’s not dissimilar to what the team did much later last season when bringing in his former safety partner, Micah Hyde. Hyde was brought in more as a mentorship role to pour into some of the younger guys on the roster. With plenty of questions at safety, Poyer being added to the practice squad could prove to be invaluable for the growth of players like Taylor Rapp, Cole Bishop, Jordan Hancock, and Damar Hamlin.

For now, he’s taking everything in stride. He’s not playing with the ones or twos on defense anymore, but instead focusing on scouting. A drastic change from the last time he was with the organization. A break in case of emergency option at safety, who loves and adores the team and city, is a big win for the organization and Poyer himself.

Fans are hoping his farewell tour ends with a Super Bowl ring. Just please, don’t go back to Miami.
