It didn’t take long for former Tennessee Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker to find a new home in the NFL after getting waived by the Detroit Lions.

Hooker, who is from Greensboro, NC, was officially signed to the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad on Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, Panthers head coach Dave Canales spoke to reporters about the decision to add Hooker to the team’s practice squad (news broke that Carolina was signing Hooker on Wednesday, but the move wasn’t official until Thursday).

Canales noted that he “loved” Hooker coming out of Tennessee. He also pointed out that Hooker has a “beautiful” throwing motion.

“Hendon Hooker is a guy that I loved in the process coming out of Tennessee, ” said Canales. “I had some great meetings with him. He really impressed me as a man, and a really high character guy with a lot of talent. A beautiful motion, big strapping guy who can run. I think Coach (Dan) Campbell said it right, sometimes guys need a change of scenery. He’s had great training up there (in Detroit).

“I am very grateful that we get a player who’s had professional training for a while now with setting protections and run game alerts and a lot of the different things that the offense in Detroit was able to build that I really admire. To be able to bring a guy in who’s had exposure in that, and the talent and the character that I’m excited about, I’m glad he’s going to be here.”

Hooker was selected by the Lions in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He was released by the Lions earlier this week after failing to beat out veteran Kyle Allen for the backup quarterback job in Detroit.
