Former Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops shared his prediction this week for the highly anticipated season opener between the Texas Longhorns and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Stoops typically shares his game predictions each week on his YouTube channel, and he unsurprisingly picks against the Longhorns on a regular basis. And that’s to be expected, of course — after all, Stoops is an Oklahoma legend who bleeds crimson and cream.
So it should be no surprise that Stoops is picking Ohio State to beat Texas in Columbus on Saturday.
What is surprising, though, is what Stoops had to say about Longhorns redshirt sophomore quarterback Arch Manning.
Stoops made it a point to say that he’s rooting for Manning to be successful at Texas.
“How do you pick against Ohio State in the horseshoe?” said Stoops. “I gotta go with Ohio State. But I’ll tell you what, Texas is going to be good. And I’m a believer in — I don’t know how to do this being from Oklahoma — but Arch Manning, what he has to live up to, I want to see the guy do well. That’s just my heart.”
“I just hope everyone gives the guy some space,” continued Stoops. “I know the family. Archie, his grandfather, is a dear friend. And I’ve gotten to know Peyton really well, and Cooper, [Archie’s] dad. So I just am naturally rooting for the guy to be able to live to up that name and to have success — hopefully just not when we (Oklahoma) play him.”
Stoops has a personal relationship with the Manning family, so his feelings on Arch go beyond sports. Still, it’s surprising to hear an Oklahoma legend publicly say he’s rooting for a Texas quarterback to succeed.
That’s how you know that Arch is truly a special player.
