Former Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones has an odd take on which program could win the SEC in 2025.
Jones, who is in his fifth season as the head coach at Arkansas State, is set to lead his team against the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday.
After Arkansas State’s season-opening win against Southeast Missouri State, Jones looked ahead to the Red Wolves’ matchup against Arkansas.
The Razorbacks were picked by the media to finish 14th in the SEC in 2025. Jones, however, told reporters that Arkansas is considered one of the most improved teams in the SEC and could even challenge to win the conference.
“It’s like I told our team, welcome to the SEC and high level football,” said Jones of playing the Razorbacks. “You have a top-notch SEC program that some people think are the most improved SEC program in there. I have a lot of respect for the SEC.”
“One of the most improved teams in the SEC,” continued Jones while discussing Arkansas. “They’re going to probably challenge to win it. They have a talented quarterback. Their payroll is probably about $17 million more than ours.”
I mean, we’ll see I guess. There’s a lot of season left to be played. But no one outside of Fayetteville thinks the Razorbacks are going to challenge to win the SEC. And Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman has one of the warmest seats in the SEC.
I just don’t see any way that Arkansas challenges for the SEC title this fall. And that’s no disrespect to Pittman and his players — it’s just that teams like Georgia, LSU, Texas, and Ole Miss, among others, simply have too much talent to finish below the Razorbacks in the conference standings.
Every coach in college football talks up their opponents. Jones, however, is on another level when it comes to talking up opponents.
Never change Butch. Never change.
