The Buffalo Bills are busy preparing for an upcoming heavyweight matchup in Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens. It has all the makings for an instant classic, but before we can get to the game, news broke that the Bills are bringing back none other than receiver Gabe Davis. Adam Schefter reported that Davis will initially be on Buffalo’s practice squad as he’s still rehabbing from a torn meniscus. Davis provides another potential weapon for Josh Allen that has plenty of remarkable history within the organization. The reigning MVP has to be more than thrilled to get his buddy back on the team.

It’s a reunion in Buffalo as three former players return

Davis is the third veteran reunion that Buffalo added back to their roster just in the past week. Buffalo brought back Jordan Phillips and Jordan Poyer to the practice squad, warming the hearts of Bills Mafia, or just me, that’s fine. This is a low-risk, high-reward for Buffalo, seeing as though Davis is the receiver seven if he were to bump up on the roster. Instead, stashing him on the practice squad and allowing him to rehab and develop could result in him being called up later in the season.

The veteran wide receiver spent his first four seasons in Buffalo after being selected in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. During his time in Buffalo, he amassed 163 receptions for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns while starting in 47 contests. Perhaps his biggest moment as a member of the team came during the Divisional Round loss to the Chiefs in 2022, where he caught a playoff-record four touchdowns. His comments immediately following the game are exactly the type of player head coach Sean McDermott loves to have around. Despite hauling in eight passes for 201 yards in regulation, the bone-crushing defeat dimmed that historic performance.

“At the end of the day, this is a team game and you want your team to keep going and to keep playing to win the Super Bowl and move forward,” Davis told reporters after the game. “I was looking forward to having the AFC championship at home as well, and we didn’t get that job done today. It’s upsetting.”

After becoming a free agent, Davis signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The veteran opened up about his release from the team after only one season, which saw him start in nine games with 20 receptions for 239 yards and only two touchdowns.

“I had torn my PCL meniscus. I had it torn in the 17th game in 2023 in Buffalo,” Davis said. “And then signed with Jacksonville and [explicit] never got back right.”

A fresh start in Buffalo with very low expectations heading into the season, while giving him time to fully heal, is the perfect fit. He’s not expected to come in and set the league on fire or even play, but he’s an excellent insurance option stashed on the team’s practice squad who has familiarity with Allen.

During Davis’ first go-round with the team, it was apparent that he wasn’t able to handle the No. 2 responsibilities at receiver. Now, in Buffalo, it gives him a perfect opportunity to start fresh. During the 2025 free agency period, Davis worked out with the San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants, New Orleans Saints, and Pittsburgh Steelers before ultimately coming home to Buffalo.
