Buffalo Bills pull the trigger to maximize Josh Allen’s window with a financial decision that could be a sign of roster moves to come
Brandon Beane has been hard at work.
The Buffalo Bills are front and center in the national media ahead of their Week 1 contest against the Baltimore Ravens, and it all has to do with superstar Dion Dawkins. News broke that the team created just under $8 million in cap space by restructuring Dawkins’ deal heading into the 2025 season. It was some much-needed cap relief for a team nearly at the bottom of the league in terms of cap space.
It wasn’t just as simple as balancing the books for Buffalo — it was making sure that the team keeps every door possible open while Josh Allen is in his prime. General manager Brandon Beane understands that the window is now, and every deal, restructure, or tweak is a piece of a much larger puzzle. Buffalo is building flexibility, and the decision could be the first of many steps aimed at ultimately maximizing Allen’s championship window.
Before the move was made, Buffalo was projected to be in the red or near the red once the offseason cap accounting rules were relaxed, so it gives them some wiggle room to navigate with plenty of players across the league becoming available either on practice squads or as free agents after not being picked up by a team after roster cutdown days.
Over The Cap had the Buffalo Bills sitting just above $6 million over the cap heading into Week 1, which will put the team around $2 million per Yates reporting. Again, it’s not indicative of a splash signing yet — other moves would need to be made. Instead, it opens up funds for more of an insurance option. It allows them to potentially get through the duration of the regular season and make some moves because of injuries down the road
Brandon Beane’s salary cap wizardry could lead to a free agent addition like Jabrill Peppers
The Bills and Beane had the difficult task of trimming the roster from 90 to 53 players and then assembling a practice squad. To add to the craziness that is being a general manager, he also had to navigate a challenging cap situation. It could open up the door for a move down the line, perhaps a certain safety by the name of Jabrill Peppers.
There’s always money in the banana stand, and Buffalo is one of the top teams in the league to give out low to middle-contracts to players. With safety being an issue, and the Bills having a few bucks to spare, maybe we’ll see some additional restructuring, followed up by some type of signing.
It’s not just a problem that the team will need to work on this season alone, since Buffalo is projected to be over the cap yet again in 2026, and $48 million under the cap in 2027
