Micah Parsons and six other Packers players receive injury designations ahead of regular season opener vs. Lions
Significant pieces are questionable to play.
Micah Parsons’ debut for the Green Bay Packers is not a certainty on Sunday against the Detroit Lions. The Packers released their final injury report for the regular season opener, and the star edge rusher is officially listed as questionable due to a back injury.
Parsons is still expected to play, but the Packers will be cautious—especially because they have a short week after the opener and play the Washington Commanders on Thursday night.
Six other players are also questionable: Wide receiver Jayden Reed (foot), cornerback Nate Hobbs (knee), safety Zayne Anderson (knee), edge defender Barryn Sorrell (knee), and wide receivers Dontayvion Wicks (calf) and Savion Williams (hamstring). The good news is that all of them practice on Thursday and Friday, increasing the likelihood that they will be available.
Quarterback Jordan Love (left thumb) and center Elgton Jenkins (hip) are off the injury report and good to go.
What the main injuries are
Parsons has an L4/L5 facet joint sprain in his back, which forced him to miss a significant portion of training camp for the Dallas Cowboys. However, he has practiced on a limited basis since being acquired by the Packers last week.
Jayden Reed is handling a foot injury, which is a Jones fracture. He missed the final parts of training camp and, earlier this week, didn’t practice on Wednesday to prioritize rehab. He returned and was limited on Thursday and Friday, but his situation still demands caution. Even if he plays, it’s possible to expect that Reed will be on a snapcount to avoid more serious problems down the road.
Nate Hobbs had a minor knee surgery in early August. He was expected to return in three weeks and be ready in time to play the first regular season games. At the time, the Packers indicated that Hobbs could have played through the injury, but since there was enough time to recover, the team went the prudent route. It’s been four weeks since the surgery.
Other side
The Lions have ruled out three players, but all are backups: Tackle Jamarco Jones (ankle), linebacker Trevor Nowaske (elbow), and running back Sione Vaki (hamstring).
Rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa (illness), guard Kayode Awosika (shoulder) are off the injury report and good to play. Tackle Taylor Decker was added to the injury report, but it was just veteran rest and doesn’t carry an injury designation.
