The LSU Tigers have yet to earn a commitment from a top quarterback in the 2026 class, and the 2027 class is quickly becoming the bigger focus in Baton Rouge. With Garrett Nussmeier graduating this offseason, the Tigers appear primed to bring in a top transfer option to at least bridge the gap into the future. In 2027, Colton Nussmeier looks like the most likely blue-chip addition.
But the race isn’t over, and Kelly is working hard to bring on more options. This past weekend, the Tigers received a big recruiting update on two quarterback prospects they’re working on. LSU hosted 2026 South Carolina quarterback commit Landon Duckworth for a visit against Louisiana Tech, and they’re trying for 2027 option Peyton Houston.
Let’s look at the latest LSU Tigers recruiting updates, courtesy of On3 and source-checked by our staff.
LSU Tigers QB Recruiting Updates
Kelly has the Tigers in the hunt for 2027 four-star Elijah Haven, and he is likely the team’s best shot at landing the next Bryce Underwood-esque athlete. For now, though, the big updates have more to do with players they’re trailing on. Duckworth is the more pressing option since he’d at least be an option to see the field next fall if the transfer portal doesn’t bring in a big, proven talent.
Here’s what Steve Wiltfong had to say about where LSU stands with the Alabama product:
“Duckworth left Baton Rouge with an offer from LSU. Leading up to the game, he spent a lot of time with the staff, soaked in the game-day atmosphere, and on Sunday, he remained on campus meeting with various people about what his experience at LSU would look like. There is confidence around the program that this moved the needle in Duckworth’s recruitment. As LSU works to get Duckworth back for an official visit, he’s saying all the right things to South Carolina about his commitment status.”
So, obviously, not great news there on Duckworth. While LSU has developed quarterbacks at a high level, Duckworth is likely looking at current Gamecocks passer LaNorris Sellers and seeing a pathway for himself to become a star.
The other option with an update is Houston. The in-state playmaker is projected to land with Oklahoma and was just in Norman for their takedown of Michigan. He’ll announce his decision next Monday, but he’ll be in LSU this Saturday night as they host Florida.
Here’s Wiltfong’s update for Houston’s recruitment:
“I continue to like where the Sooners stand with the Rivals Industry’s No. 8 quarterback Peyton Houston after talking sources that spent time with him in Norman over the weekend. The buzz has faded from USC over the last two weeks and has shifted toward head coach Brent Venables and company.”
