The Minnesota Vikings beat the Chicago Bears 24-17 on Monday night thanks in large part to a kick return by former Tennessee running back Ty Chandler.

Chandler, who finished his college career at North Carolina, returned a kick out of the end zone with 2:02 remaining in the fourth quarter. His decision to return the kick prevented the Bears from being able to utilize the two minute warning due to the time that ran off the clock during the return (the Bears had just one timeout remaining at the time).

The Bears were foolish for kicking the ball to Ty Chandler

Because of Chandler’s decision to return the kick, the Bears got the ball back with just a few seconds left in the fourth quarter while down three points. It wasn’t enough time to move the ball into field goal range or even into Hail Mary range.

Chicago should’ve kicked the ball out of bounds (as Vols legend Peyton Manning noted). That would’ve preserved the two minute warning. And since the Vikings needed just one first down to put the game away, it’s not like the field position mattered (kicking the ball out of bounds would’ve given the Vikings the ball at their own 40 yard line).

It was a high football IQ decision by Chandler to return the kick, and a low football IQ move by Bears head coach Ben Johnson to not kick the ball out of bounds.
