ESPN analyst and former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy didn’t move the Tennessee Vols up in his Top 25 rankings this week after UT’s 72-17 win against East Tennessee State.
In fact, McElroy did the opposite — he moved the Vols down a spot in his Top 25 rankings.
McElroy had Tennessee at No. 13 after the Vols’ season-opening win against Syracuse. He moved Tennessee down to No. 14 after their 55 point win against ETSU.
Greg McElroy explains why he moved the Tennessee Vols down a spot in his Top 25 rankings
McElroy said on Always College Football this week that he moved Tennessee down a spot because of Syracuse’s narrow win against UConn this past Saturday.
“At No. 14, it’s the Tennessee Volunteers,” said McElroy. “I had them at No. 13 last week. Part of the reason why I dropped them down just a little bit is the win against Syracuse doesn’t look quite as good, but we’re going to learn all we need to know about Tennessee.
“Syracuse, of course, looks human — so maybe that is an indictment on Tennessee. I have no idea. But I really like what I’ve seen so far from the Volunteers. They’ll host the Georgia Bulldogs (on Saturday). And it’ll be a great opportunity for them to show just how far they’ve come — because they have not played well against the Georgia Bulldogs in the past. They have struggled in the Josh Heupel tenure. Can they be better in what should be a very entertaining scene there in Neyland Stadium?”
Syracuse needed overtime in Week 2 to beat a UConn team that went 9-4 last season (with a win against the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Fenway Bowl).
It’s still very early in the season — much too early to judge how the Vols’ win against Syracuse will look by the end of the season.
As McElroy said, we’ll learn all we need to know about who the Vols are this season on Saturday when they host the Bulldogs. That matchup will tell us a lot about this year’s version of both teams.
Tennessee is probably going to move a significant amount in McElroy’s rankings next week — we just don’t know in which direction.
