Ole Miss running back Kewan Lacy leads the Southeastern Conference in rushing through two weeks. Last week, he ran for 138 yards and a touchdown to lead the Rebels to a road conference win over Kentucky. He has 246 total and four touchdowns already.
Lacy was wanted badly by Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin coming out of Lancaster (Tex.) in the 2024 class. But, he opted to sign with Missouri. Then after just one season in Columbia with Eli Drinkwitz, he chose to enter the transfer portal.
Fast forward to this week and Lacy spoke with On3’s Pete Nakos about why he chose Ole Miss and how things are going in Oxford thus far.
Several programs reached out, but Kewan Lacy knew he wanted to play at Ole Miss.
“After taking a bunch of calls from other big programs, I just knew the love and authenticity from Ole Miss was real. They recruited me in high school and spent a lot of time building a relationship with me before I decided to go to Missouri,” Lacy said. “Once I got in the portal and we reconnected, it just felt like home. I knew they believed in me and understood how to utilize my skill set.”
He leads the country in missed tackles forced and has Ole Miss fans reminiscing about the 2022 run game Kiffin had which averaged 256 yards per game – featuring Zach Evans and Quinshon Judkins.
Lacy, who coincidentally enough reminds me a lot of Evans, is giving Kiffin what he wants offensively. Everyone talks about Ole Miss under Kiffin as this high-flying program who throws it all over the yard. This is true, but it’s dictated by the run game. Kiffin loves to dictate pace and tempo with the run to set up the pass. Lacy is allowing him to do this in 2025.

Ole Miss, Lane Kiffin might have found a new secret weapon on offense in an unexpected position group
In the Ole Miss Rebels’ 63-7 victory Saturday, transfer running back Kewan Lacy made his debut in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium a three-touchdown performance. The Missouri transfer ran for 108 yards on 16 carries – albeit against a lesser opponent – giving Lane Kiffin’s offense what it was missing in 2024. But Lacy is all of a […]
Kewan Lacy notated the relationships at Ole Miss. It’s coming through on the field, too.
“This is probably the most fun I’ve had playing football in a long time. This team, our coaching staff and all of my teammates. We are all playing for each other; we are all dialed in and executing at a high level,” Lacy said. “Coach [Kevin] Smith’s coaching style is bringing the best out of me. I’m making plays and just trying to do whatever I can to help this team win and go 1-0 each week.”
Last week you could see the trust Kiffin has in Lacy. After falling behind 10-0 on the road at Kentucky, the Rebels leaned heavily on the former four-star prospect to settle things down and to control the pace and tempo of the game. Fast forward to the fourth quarter and Lacy is icing it away with a 30-yard run.
The pro mindset at Ole Miss is what is making the difference early for the Rebels.
“We are all playing for a national championship. That’s the precedent that is set in the building. We want to win, and we want to outcompete anybody who lines up across from us. I feel like I can contribute in a lot of different phases,” Lacy said. “Pass pro, being a receiving threat out of the back field and hitting home run plays in the ground game. Whatever my team needs me to do to win, I’m prepared for it, I’ve worked hard for it.”
