‘He keeps attacking day in and day out’ – Chiefs’ secondary will improve as key player continues to ramp up from injury
Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie is confident.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ secondary had a rough showing in Week 1.
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns against the unit, while also completing 75 percent of his passes. Cornerback Kristian Fulton, who was one of the Chiefs’ top free agent signings during the offseason, played just 15 snaps.
That was expected, as he continues to ramp up after missing most of training camp and preseason coming off of knee surgery. His playing time should increase in Week 2 as Kansas City hosts the Philadelphia Eagles in its home opener.
Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie has high expectations for Kristian Fulton
While speaking to the media on Friday, McDuffie commented on the progress that Fulton has made, and what his expectations are of him.
“He’s doing good,” McDuffie said. “He missed all of training camp. He got his mental reps, but actually getting in the game, playing with the a new defense, playing with new guys who do different things, that’s kind of takes a little time to get that feel.
“But from what I’ve seen, he keeps attacking day in and day out. He’s asking all the right questions, and he’s out there hustling, which that’s all we ask for. You come in, you work hard, you try to learn the defense, and you go out there and do your best. And I think he’s one of those guys that is going to be able to do a lot for us.”
The Chiefs could certainly use a higher dose of Fulton as they get set to face a lethal Eagles’ offense on Sunday. The more Fulton plays, the more McDuffie can come inside and play in the slot, where he excels. K.C.’s secondary will have its hands full against Philly wide receivers A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Jahan Dotson, but will get a break as tight end Dallas Goedert as been ruled out with a knee injury.
