When the Oklahoma Sooners found out they were going to need a new quarterback, they immediately hit the transfer portal. Jackson Arnold transferred to the Auburn Tigers, and Oklahoma went and grabbed John Mateer, who was under their new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle a season ago.

Now, Mateer is doing things that no one else is doing, and he’s playing out of his mind.

According to the Oklahoma Sooners’ official Twitter page, John Mateer’s nine straight games of having at least one rush TD and one pass TD is the longest active streak, meaning no one else in the entire country can say they’ve done what he’s doing. But Mateer can still improve on a lot of things.

Sooners QB John Mateer has things he needs to work on

The stat is insane, and it shows just how good he is at both throwing it and running it. But, especially how much of a threat he is on the ground, too. In three games, he has had at least one of both, which means this streak dates back to last year, too, when he was at Washington State. Mateer has been a huge part of the running game, really the only running game OU has outside of Tory Blaylock. And, he has made some insane, Heisman-worthy plays with his arm, too.

But he has some things he really needs to work on. Through three games, Mateer has taken far too many hits, and some of these hits are hard. You love how tough he is because he usually gets right up immediately. But, you’d like to see him slide more often, or if it’s on the sideline, get out of bounds more often instead of fighting for those extra yards while being hit. Those hits really add up over the year, especially when SEC play gets here, and everything is more physical.

And then, Mateer has to cut down on the interceptions. He has had one every single game. Now, granted, one or two of them have come by way of his receivers hitting the ball in the air, or something that’s not totally his fault. But if you limit those turnovers, some of these scores in these games look completely different.

Sometimes, Mateer gets too ahead of himself in his processing, and he just simply makes a mistake. That’s fine, as that happens to literally every single quarterback. And, I’m sure Arbuckle and the rest of the staff are working on it. But Mateer is a Heisman-level quarterback, and we are seeing it right in front of our eyes.
