Tennessee WR Chris Brazzell II just joined Justin Jefferson, Deebo Samuel, Devonta Smith, and a former Vol on a very short and prestigious list after Saturday
It was a truly rare showing for CBII.
Tennessee wide receiver Chris Brazzell II had a game to remember on Saturday against the Georgia Bulldogs, even if the game is one that Vol fans would now like to forget.
In Tennessee’s 44-41 overtime loss to the Dawgs, Brazzell II went completely off, totaling 6 catches for 177 yards and 3 touchdowns. It was a rare and elite performance that you don’t see very often, particularly in a game of that magnitude.
How rare? According to Tennessee’s stats and information department, only five SEC wide receivers – including Brazzell II – have notched 175+ receiving yards and 3+ touchdowns against a top 10 opponent in the last 25 years, and the list is very impressive.
Chris Brazzell II joins Justin Jefferson, Deebo Samuel, Devonta Smith, and Jalin Hyatt as SEC receivers to total 175+ receiving yards and 3+ touchdowns against a top 10 opponent since 2000
Tennessee fans need no reminder about the game from Hyatt on that list. Brazzell II’s performance – and Tennessee’s showing on Saturday, for that matter – had strong similarities to Hyatt’s output and the Vols’ effort back on October 15, 2022, when UT ended their 15-game skid against Alabama 52-49.
Where Hyatt was racing alone into the end zone time and again against a bewildered and beleaguered Crimson Tide defense, Brazzell II found himself trotting in easily on multiple occasions with a Georgia defender behind him. The vibes were similar. It’s just amazing how one kick – make or missed – can change the perception of a game and a performance.
But the other names on the list really put into perspective how special of a performance that was from Brazzell II on Saturday. Justin Jefferson, Deebo Samuel, and Devonta Smith are three of the best wide receivers in college football over the last quarter century, and now, they’re all three among the best the NFL has to offer during their careers, with Jefferson and Samuel as former First Team All-Pros and Smith a Super Bowl champion last season for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Brazzell II has a long way to go to enter that class of player, but he’s already turning heads in what could be a special season for #17 in Knoxville.
