LSU’s latest commitment ends the chances of a Nussmeier family legacy at quarterback before it could even begin
The latest commitment is great for the LSU Tigers, but not so much for the Nussmeier family.
Head coach Brian Kelly and the LSU Tiger program received some great news on Monday when 2027 Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian Academy quarterback Peyton Houston opted to stay in the state of Louisiana over other prominent programs like Oklahoma, USC, among many others. Considered one of the top signal callers in the 2027 class, life after Garrett Nussmeier just got a lot brighter. Many thought this one was the Sooners’ battle to lose, but LSU swooped in and got it done.
With the commitment of Houston, you now have the face of your 2027 recruiting class, and an impressive one. Houston currently sits as the No. 126 overall player, No. 11 quarterback, and No. player in the state of Louisiana for the 2027 recruiting class, according to the 247 Sports Composite ranking. The 5-10, 200-pound passer was outstanding as a sophomore in 2024. He managed to throw for 4,480 yards and 38 touchdowns, while throwing just six interceptions and completing 70 percent of his passes. Houston also added another 690 yards rushing and six scores on the ground.
Before this commitment was announced, many expected that the 2027 signal caller for the Tigers was going to be one with a very familiar name. Rivals recruiting experts Steve Wiltfong and Sam Speigelman had previously put in expert predictions for talented Flower Mound (Texas) Marcus quarterback Colton Nussmeier to land with LSU. Yes, you read that last name correctly. Colton is the younger brother of current Tigers starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.
The older Nussmeier is in the middle of his second year starting in Baton Rouge. In 34 games played in his career, Nussmeier has thrown for 6,461 yards and 43 touchdowns. During his first year as a starter in 2024, he led the SEC in passing with 4,052 passing yards.
The younger Nussmeier has a strong argument as the more talented quarterback between the two brothers. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Colton is ranked as the No. 70 overall player, No. 5 quarterback, and No. 11 player in the state of Texas for the 2027 recruiting class. Some top programs have been pursuing Nussmeier, including the Tigers, Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, Florida, and Auburn, among several others.
For a minute, it looked like the Nussmeier family was set up for some family reunions down in Baton Rouge over the next several years. That includes their father, Doug Nussmeier, who is the offensive coordinator currently for the New Orleans Saints. Unfortunately, that did not work out with the latest commitment of Houston.

Following a hard-fought 20-10 victory over Florida on Saturday night, LSU head coach Brian Kelly faced tough questions about his No. 3 Tigers’ offensive performance.
