LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt received some good advice this week from an unexpected source: former Tigers head coach Brian Kelly.

That’s not the person that most folks in Baton Rouge probably want to hear from, but Kelly actually had some good advice to pass along to Leavitt.

Kelly wants to see Leavitt quit taking so many hits.

“What I’m concerned with more is the hits that he’s taking,” said Kelly on College Sports Radio on Sirius XM. “I think he exposes himself to violent collisions in the SEC. And if he continues to play a game that physical, they’re gonna play without him one of these weeks. And their schedule is such a bear on the back end. So I’m not saying you can’t run him. I’m saying that he’s gotta be a little bit more concerned with contact as he runs the football. Because right now, it is reckless abandon when he’s running the football.”

It’s a long season. If Leavitt wants to make it to the end, he can’t keep taking those hits.

That means Leavitt needs to stand in the pocket and make some throws instead of looking to run when his first read is covered.

“Every time you watch Sam Leavitt, it’s like if that first read’s not there, it’s backyard football,” said former Vanderbilt quarterback Jordan Rodgers this week.

Leavitt’s legs can be a huge weapon for LSU, but he needs to be a bit more judicious about when he uses that weapon. Otherwise, he’s going to be banged up all season.
