‘He’s on a short leash now’ – Former SEC QB drops some hard truth that LSU Tigers fans don’t want to hear, but it’s a real issue
The LSU Tigers are looking to bounce back after a tough loss to the Ole Miss Rebels last Saturday in Oxford.
LSU lost to Ole Miss last Saturday in Oxford because the Rebels had the better quarterback.
Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss is the quarterback that Lane Kiffin wanted at LSU this fall.
Chambliss, though, chose to stay at Ole Miss for his final season of eligibility.
And Kiffin was forced to turn to the transfer portal for a quarterback. He eventually settled on Arizona State transfer Sam Leavitt after some other options fell through.
Leavitt is a talented quarterback, but he has some deficiencies. And if those deficiencies don’t get cleaned up, it could lead to a lackluster season for the Tigers.
“Every time you watch Sam Leavitt, it’s like if that first read’s not there, it’s backyard football,” said former Vanderbilt quarterback Jordan Rodgers this week. “As much as Trinidad Chambliss did some of that last year (under Kiffin at Ole Miss), and we love his dynamic ability to scramble, one of the best things Trinidad Chambliss did at Ole Miss was get the ball out of his hands on time.
“This (Kiffin) offense is predicated on the quick passing game, and without that, you can see that it falls apart. They’re not going to be a playoff football team. They might be a seven or eight win football team if Sam Leavitt continues to just play backyard football. That’s not what they need. And I think he’s on a short leash now. There’s an opportunity that it might not be him long term if he can’t fix this part of his game.”
LSU fans may not like hearing that about Leavitt, but it’s what the film shows. Leavitt doesn’t look like the classic Kiffin quarterback. He looks like he can’t wait to get off schedule and run around.
If he doesn’t play well against Texas A&M this weekend, maybe Kiffin should give Landen Clark a look. After all, Clark could end up being a much better fit for what Kiffin actually needs.
