Jase Mathews, a four-star wide receiver from Leakesville, Mississippi, recently announced his commitment to Auburn University and head coach Hugh Freeze via social media. Despite his pledge, other top programs, including LSU, continue to show strong interest in the highly sought-after prospect.
Ranked as the No. 2 wide receiver in the nation for the 2026 recruiting class, Mathews selected Auburn over finalists LSU, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound standout from Greene County High School solidified his status as a top-tier talent with an impressive junior season, recording 68 catches for 1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns.
LSU made a strong push for Mathews, with head coach Brian Kelly and his staff hosting the receiver and his family for an extensive visit during the offseason.
LSU Won’t Stop Calling 5-Star WR Jase Mathews
The Tigers showcased their vision for Mathews, highlighting his potential to be a cornerstone of their offensive scheme. Sources close to the recruitment process noted that the relationship built between Mathews’ family and the LSU program played a significant role in keeping the Tigers in contention until the final decision.
“LSU, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M,” Mathews said. “I hear from them probably every week or every other week, and they’ve been trying to get me to a game. And I don’t know if I’ll make it to any of the games. If I do, I don’t want to be anything bad or anything like that. I’m still War Eagle all the way.”
Ultimately, Auburn’s Hugh Freeze and his staff sealed the deal, securing Mathews’ verbal commitment on Friday evening. The Tigers prioritized Mathews throughout the recruitment process, outpacing their SEC rivals to land the elite pass-catcher.
While LSU missed out on Mathews, Brian Kelly’s program remains strong in the 2026 recruiting cycle, with three wide receiver commitments already in the fold.
