Bills’ Sean McDermott makes a bold statement about where the team needs to improve with special message about Josh Allen and his greatness
The Buffalo Bills pulled out the victory in Orchard Park, New York. That doesn’t mean it was all perfect for the Bills, and head coach Sean McDermott pointed to one area they must improve.
Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott spoke to the media on Friday about what he needs to see from defensive end Greg Rousseau and the entire defense moving forward after Buffalo’s Week 3 win over the Miami Dolphins. The pass rush just wasn’t there for the Bills throughout much of the game, giving Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa time to pick apart the defense.
That’s not to say that the pass rush was nonexistent, as rookie defensive tackle Deone Walker eventually broke through the line and forced an errant pass, allowing linebacker Terrel Bernard to haul in the interception.
Despite the flash from Walker, the entire unit has some work to do. McDermott didn’t hold back with his response, calling it an issue that must be addressed moving forward.
“Overall, again, you’re looking to improve in every area,” McDermott said. “Whether it’s an individual player, I know Greg is committed to that. He’s one of our hardest workers, a very conscientious young man, and a big part of our team. Overall, as a team, we’re looking to do the same [ . . . ] But the pass rush is needed, just talking generally speaking, and my philosophy is you’ve got to be able to get there with your front four, and your coverage needs to work in tandem with them. That’s going to be a key piece for our team, not just our defense but our team moving forward.”
The head coach was then asked if the team was getting enough out of Rousseau. McDermott emphasized that they’ll need to see more from him moving forward, but he has the utmost confidence in the defensive end.
“I think Greg had some good reps, and then there are some other things he would tell you that he wants to do better in the first three games,” McDermott said. “Going forward, we are going to need that 100 percent. I think Joey’s off to a really great start, creating some disruption back there, and we need to find or continue to find players that are going to help us and add to that mix.”
McDermott has high praise for Josh Allen after Week 3 win
Allen made NFL history in the contest, becoming the fastest player to ever achieve 300 career touchdowns, including the postseason. What’s more, Allen limited his turnovers once again, something he has focused on over the past few offseasons, and it shows on game day.
McDermott was asked about Allen reducing his turnovers and whether the signal-caller was continuing to take steps forward in his game to ensure he didn’t put the ball in harm’s way. McDermott had a glowing response, and one that the Bills Mafia can’t help but agree with.
“Incredibly so, I couldn’t be more proud, happy, of the way he’s really learned the game and become a really good decision maker,” McDermott said. “He understands the game that takes place within the game. Not everybody can get themselves to that level. I think Josh Allen continues to show why he is who he is. In my 25 years or more in this league, very rarely do you get a chance to witness what we in Buffalo have had a chance to witness, and it’s pretty special.”
Allen is one of one in the National Football League, and his performance in Week 3 was further proof. After the drought years the Bills Mafia endured, Allen’s arrival in Buffalo has been well worth the wait. There’s still a lot of work to do, but the future is bright in Buffalo with No. 17 at quarterback.
