With fellow wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice sidelined, Tyquan Thornton has by far been the Kansas City Chiefs’ most dynamic playmaker this season.

Thornton is tied with WR Hollywood Brown for the most receiving yards on the team with 171, but has achieved that on 10 less receptions. He is the only Chiefs pass catcher to have multiple touchdown receptions on the season, and has caught a ball of 30+ air yards in every game.

Midway through the fourth quarter when Kansas City was trying to put the New York Giants away in Week 3, quarterback Patrick Mahomes connected with Thornton on a 33-yard pass that set the offense up with first-and-goal at the 1-yard line. Thornton was blanketed by the defender, but went up and made the catch anyway.

Chiefs WR Tyquan Thornton makes a statement on social media

Thornton finished with season-highs in receptions (5) and receiving yards (71) against the Giants, while also catching his second touchdown of the year. After the game, he took to X to post the message “Thank you for all the hate & doubt!”

While speaking to the media on Wednesday, Thornton explained what he meant by his post.

“That moment was pretty huge for me,” Thornton said. “My time in New England, while I was there, the media used to try to beat up on me a little bit. I remember not having the best game in my career, being a young player, going to Twitter and seeing the media just beating me up.

“I used to get down on myself a little bit, but looking at myself in the mirror, knowing who I truly am, I’m saying keeping my head high. Just keep pounding at the rock and keep working. Now it’s starting to show a little bit, so I just want to keep on getting better and keep on improving.”

Thornton was a second-round pick by the Patriots in 2022, He showed some flashes during his tenure in New England, but injuries and a poorly ran offense with very little talented prevented him from breaking out.

Thornton signed with the Chiefs’ practice squad in November of 2024, which allowed him to get up to speed mentally before offseason activities. He was a standout during training camp and preseason, and is now translating it to regular season success. Thornton’s role may reduce a bit when Worthy and Rice return, but he has proven himself trustworthy as a big-play threat who can change a game at any moment.
