Week 5 of the college football season was circled on the calendar before the season began, when looking at the Ohio State Buckeyes’ schedule. Going on the road for the first time of the season, all the way to Washington, had the potential to be an interesting one against the Huskies.

Ohio State walked away with a 24-6 win over Washington, ending the Huskies’ 22-game win streak at home. It wasn’t just a crowd of purple for the Huskies in Seattle; Ohio State fans showed up, too, and Buckeyes HC Ryan Day took notice.

Ryan Day points out the impact that Ohio State fans had on the win over Washington

“It was great for our guys to see some red here,” Day said after the fourth win of the season for Ohio State. “I think anytime that you take a young team on the road, it’s great to have familiar faces in the crowd. They had a presence, and that was great.”

The game was played over 2,400 miles away from Columbus, and Ohio State fans were still heard in this one. There were times when Ohio State fans could be heard on Washington third downs, which is a time when the home crowd is usually quiet. Washington was averaging north of 500 yards per game coming into the Big Ten opener against Ohio State, and the Buckeyes held them to 234 total yards on Saturday afternoon. Huskies QB Demond Williams was an efficient 18-of-22 passing for 173 yards, but the Buckeyes kept him out of the end zone.

Ohio State’s defensive plan to keep a quarterback spy on Williams with linebackers Arvell Reese and Sonny Styles worked well, and he was held to -28 yards when the six sacks are factored into the yardage. Caden Curry led the Buckeyes with three sacks and was the defensive catalyst all over the field. Matt Patricia’s defense couldn’t have played much better outside of a couple of chunk plays given up in the first half against Washington.

There will be no worry of travel next week for Buckeye fans, as they’ll be at home playing the Minnesota Golden Gophers in another Big Ten matchup. Ohio State fans want more night games, and they’ll be getting that in Week 6 with a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff. It’ll be the 4-0 Buckeyes against the 3-1 Gophers next Saturday.
