The Buffalo Bills and New Orleans Saints Week 4 matchup is nearly underway. Ahead of the contest, the Bills released their official inactive report, with more than a few surprises for both the offense and defense.

Heading into the matchup, head coach Sean McDermott had already ruled out linebacker Matt Milano and defensive tackle Ed Oliver. There was a glimmer of hope that offensive lineman Spencer Brown would be able to compete, but as of Sunday morning, he was one of the team’s inactives.

Brown is a cornerstone on the offensive line and has ascended to one of the very best at his position. Whenever a player responsible for protecting quarterback Josh Allen goes down, it raises concerns.

Brown’s prowess in run blocking and pass protection will surely be missed. Brown’s absence allows another player to rise to the occasion and give the front office a look at the depth they have on the roster.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the inactive report is that of cornerback and return man Brandon Codrington, who didn’t appear on the injury report, making him a healthy scratch. It’ll be interesting to see how Buffalo handles the kick and punt returns. On the official depth chart, receiver Khalil Shakir and running back Ty Johnson fall behind Codrington for those responsibilities.

Don’t be surprised if receivers Curtis Samuel or Keon Coleman get a shot at it as well.

With Oliver’s absence, Bills Mafia thought this would be a perfect time for rookie defensive end Landon Jackson to get his first NFL action, but he was ruled out of the contest.

The third-round pick has yet to see the field on game day, and social media was none too thrilled with him being inactive.

Rounding out the inactive report was cornerback Ja’Marcus Ingram, who didn’t have an injury designation and looks to be a healthy scratch.

Another surprise was who wasn’t on the list. Samuel had been a healthy scratch for the first three weeks of the season and will be seeing his first action of 2025 against the Saints. In March 2024, Samuel signed a three-year deal with Buffalo, but his tenure has been derailed due to injury.

All that’s left to do is play some football. The key for Buffalo will be to continue to play good, sound, fundamental football in hopes of staying undefeated while leaving the Saints still looking for answers.

McDermott emphasized the importance of “defending our dirt” for the team’s success. So, Bills Mafia, are you ready for kickoff?
