Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni is known across the league as one of the biggest smack-talkers, and on Sunday, he gave fellow smack-talker and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield a taste of his own medicine.

During the third quarter of the Eagles’ 31-25 win over Mayfield and the Bucs, Sirianni was spotted from the sidelines chirping something at Mayfield. However, NFL on FOX’s Tom Rinaldi said Sirianni had been doing that up and down the sideline the whole game.

Nick Sirianni appears to be a part of the Eagles’ taunting penalties problem

Following the victory, reporters asked Sirianni about his sideline antics, and he did nothing but praise Mayfield while dodging the question.

“Baker and I go back to when we practiced against him when we were in Indy, when he was at Cleveland,” Sirianni said. “His quarterback coach, actually, Ryan Lindley, who was there then, played for me when I was a quarterback coach, so I got to know Baker. I’ve got a lot of respect for him. I think he’s a really competitive dude. Just trying to talk a little bit of back and forth right there because we know each other ,and again, like I’ve said to him besides our guys, he’s one of my favorite guys to watch in the NFL. I said that to him after the game because I’ve got a lot of respect for him.”

The Eagles have had issues with taunting penalties during the first four weeks of the season, and while Sirianni doesn’t publicly condone it, he has made it clear he wants his players to play with emotions within the rules of the game.

“I’m not sure we can focus on it any more than we already have,” he said. “We’re touching the fire and we’re getting burnt. We’ll continue to emphasize it, but we’ll continue to play with emotion.”

If Sirianni can taunt from the sidelines, he clearly doesn’t have a problem with his own players doing it. So far, the Eagles are 4-0, but if these silly penalties keep happening, they’re bound to break their win streak at some point.
