‘A lot of young guys are too cool for school’ – Brent Venables keeps it real about the maturity of a player who has the country’s attention
Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners have the utmost faith in Michael Hawkins.
Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners could be tasked with using their backup quarterback for possibly the next two weeks. However, Michael Hawkins is not your average backup QB, and the Sooners have all the faith in him.
“A lot of young guys are too cool for school…but Mike’s been a sponge. John’s got a great approach. He’s not trying to teach anybody, but he can and does. It’s really cool to see that relationship. Mike [QB Michael Hawkins] has come a long way,” Venables told reporters earlier this week.
Hawkins started four games last year and played in seven. He has starting experience and endured one of the worst seasons the Sooners have had in 20 years. He’s learned from it all and is even more mature now. And on top of that, he’s damn good at football.
Hawkins will use Saturday vs. Kent State to get right
This year, Hawkins has only appeared in one game, against the Temple Owls in garbage time, where he rushed for 25 yards on six carries and threw for five yards on 1/3 passing. So, it’s been hard to see how good he is compared to last season.
However, last year you could see just how much potential he has, and it exudes through whatever device you watched his film on. He can throw the deep ball, and he can run it. Everything else is still a work in progress. He’s far from perfect as a QB, but he’ll get to show where he’s improved. We have heard countless times about how much he has improved maturity-wise; now it’s time to see how he’s improved on the field.
Kent State is the perfect game to see how he’s improved his game on the field, because, to be pretty blunt, they are not very good. It’s the perfect “get right game” if you will, for him to build that chemistry with his starters, and go through some live game reps as the starter.
So, believe it or not, Saturday is very important.
