Georgia Bulldogs running back Cash Jones has had a quieter start to the 2025 college football season than expected; however, he made a statement on Saturday afternoon in the team’s dominating, 35-14, win over the Kentucky Wildcats.

Jones didn’t help much in the ground game, rushing one time for -5 yards, but he did make up for it by reeling in a 16-yard pass from quarterback Gunner Stockton for a touchdown to put the Dawgs up 35-7.

Jones immediately followed up his touchdown with a tackle on the kickoff that put Kentucky inside their own 15-yard line.

Jones’ Role Is Clear, and It’s Not In the Ground Game

While Jones hasn’t been making an impact in the ground game, he has on special teams and in the passing game as a third-down back, which head coach Kirby Smart pointed out during a recent SEC media call.

“He’s doing a great job,” Smart said. “He played more special team snaps. I think anybody on the team, he’s been a major factor on our punt team, block punt block team. He blocked a punt, and he’s big factor on pump punt return. So he does a tremendous job. He played also third downs, and had a huge pickup on third down. And that’s where his best role is it’s two minute back, and as a third down back, he’s done a really good job of those two things, so no he’s not dealing with any injury or anything like that.”

So far this season, Jones has recorded six receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown.

His involvement in the passing game is nothing new, as he wrapped up the 2024 season with 24 catches for 275 yards and four touchdowns. Georgia knows exactly how he fits into their offensive scheme, but it’s time they start taking fuller advantage of his skill set.
