The future for Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill is cloudy. The early reports appear to offer optimism for Hill that a recovery from last Monday’s devastating knee injury suffered against the New York Jets had avoided the absolute worst case scenarios in a bid for a return to the field in 2026. But even before Tyreek Hill was injured against the Jets, his future in South Florida was cloudy at best.

Hill is currently under schedule to play in Miami in 2026. But his contract has no guaranteed money and his scheduled compensation is more than many starting quarterbacks. Amid the intersection of Tyreek Hill’s age, cost, and potential decline, he was considered a potential departure even before this injury.

This morning brought a fresh outlook on the situation from CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones and it affirms that those in the league are reading the writing on the wall the same as everyone else.

New report highlights league expectation for how the Dolphins handle Tyreek Hill’s contract after the season

“League sources view it as next to impossible the Dolphins would guarantee such money when Hill won’t be able to pass a physical at that point, meaning Miami would release the receiver before any 2026 dollar becomes guaranteed,” wrote Jones.

“A return to Miami for Hill cannot be ruled out, but it’s impossible to know that today. The biggest factor in that decision will be Hill’s health five months from now. There is also the question of who will make that call in Miami.”

Tyreek Hill’s current contract commitments for 2026

  • $5 million roster bonus due third day of the league year in March
  • $11 million of base salary guarantees on third day of the league year in March
  • $29.9 million in total base salary scheduled (including $11 million that guarantees in March)
  • $100,000 workout bonus
  • $1 million in per game active roster bonuses

Both Jones and, later, Miami Herald insider Barry Jackson, have echoed that it’s absolutely possible that Hill is back with Miami in 2026 — as Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, communicated that would be Hill’s desire in the immediate aftermath of his injury.

But a return in 2026 requires far too many hurdles that figure not to have clarity for next season by the time Miami’s decision regarding all of his pending compensation guarantee deadlines. And that’s why those within the league, per Jones, expect Miami will be released. A return for Hill in Miami would require a new contract — although it could be argued that was true before this injury, too.

Calibrate your expectations accordingly. Look for the first shoe to drop to be Hill released before the start of the league year in March, no matter what his medical outlook is. From there, Hill’s recovery, medical outlook, and what powers that be are in charge in Miami will ultimately decide if there’s more mutual interest or not.
