Lions injuries at a key defensive position can help Chiefs’ offense maintain its upward trajectory in Week 6
The Lions are running out an entire replacement cornerback group for Week 6’s game vs. the Chiefs.
The Kansas City Chiefs don’t have much to celebrate following the Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the offense returning to its old ways feels like something they can hang their hat on. They can also continue to build upon it in Week 6 on “Sunday Night Football” against the Detroit Lions.
The underlying offensive performance against the Jags shows a lot of promise. The offense notched 476 yards, averaged 7.6 yards per play, allowed no sacks, and converted on 4-of-5 trips to the red zone. This is all without WR Rashee Rice, who will have to sit out one more week before he’s eligible to return to action.
With the passing game beginning to really take shape, the Chiefs will have an opportunity to take advantage against a banged-up Detroit team at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday night.
Lions will be missing their top three outside cornerbacks for Week 6 against the Chiefs
The Lions’ secondary is decimated with injuries right now, as they will be without their top three outside cornerbacks for the Week 6 game on “Sunday Night Football.” Both outside starters, D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold, won’t play due to injury. Top backup Khalil Dorsey is also dealing with an injury that will keep him out for a while. That leaves Detroit with a trio of cast-offs for the upcoming game.
Lions Projected Starting CBs for Week 6:
- RCB: Amik Robertson
- LCB: Rock Ya-Sin
- Nickel: Avonte Maddox
The Chiefs, of course, are familiar with Robertson from his time with the Las Vegas Raiders. Meanwhile, Ya-Sin and Maddox are both veterans who have seen a lot of games. Detroit also just added veteran CB Arthur Maulet to the practice squad. Between Robertson, Ya-Sin, and Maddox, this group has over 100 starts under their belt, but they’re also backups and weren’t starting over guys like Reed, Arnold, and Dorsey for a reason.
Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receivers are thriving in 2025
Of Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ 1205 passing yards, 843 of those yards have been generated by wide receivers. Of his eight passing touchdowns thrown through the first five weeks of the season, five have come from his receivers. This is despite Xavier Worthy only playing in Weeks 4 and 5, as well as the aforementioned Rashee Rice suspension. There will be opportunities in the passing game in Week 6, just because this replacement cornerback group from Detroit is still beginning to gel. A good game plan from Andy Reid and Matt Nagy, featuring unique route combinations, double moves, and comebacks, could really open things up in a way this team hasn’t seen in a few years.
