Georgia’s Kirby Smart gives good reason as to why he’s not thinking about Penn State firing James Franklin
James Franklin just got fired but Kirby Smart isn’t thinking about that at all.
Penn State made college football headlines this week for firing head coach James Franklin after 12 seasons.
It was a move that wasn’t too shocking since Franklin was on the hot seat for losing three straight games. What was shocking, however, was how much the school still owes Franklin. According to multiple reports, Franklin will get a paycheck worth north of $49 million following his dismissal.
What does Kirby Smart think about the Franklin firing? He’s not giving it much, if any, thought, and for all of the right reasons.
“I don’t really know,” Smart said. “I don’t think about it, to be honest with you. I’m just so engulfed with everything that’s going on right here right now. Like, how do we prepare for this game that the outside stuff is offseason stuff to me. I’m focused on Ole Miss.”
Georgia Faces a Tough Task Against Ole Miss’s Explosive Offense
The Bulldogs face a tough task against an explosive Rebels offense that stars dual-threat quarterback Trinidad Chambliss.
“He’s quick. He’s fast. He’s tough,” Smart said. “He’s got great lower body. Great instincts. There’s a difference in being a fast guy and being a runner. He’s patient behind blocks, quick when he needs to be. Some guys can only run perimeter runs well. Some can only run internal well. He runs both. He does a great job in the draw game. He sets up blocks, and he’s a good passer. But I mean, they should get the greatest award there is for finding this guy and having the department within. I don’t know who scouted him, who found him, but he is a really good football player that they went out and got and did a tremendous job.”
Chambliss has completed 65.4% of his attempts for 1,286 yards and seven touchdowns with one interception. He has also rushed 61 times for 281 yards and three scores.
But Chambliss isn’t the only one that Georgia needs to worry about stopping. Running back Kewan Lacy also presents a problem.
“He becomes more effective because of the quarterback,” Smart said. “He becomes more effective because of the tempo. They use tempo. They go really fast and wear people down. You get lots of snaps against them. We’ve had a lot of practice getting a lot of snaps, that’s for sure, defensively. They get lots of snaps. They wear you down. He’s a good back. He’s vertical, sideways, catches the ball, explosive. Really good player.”
Lacy has racked up 587 rushing yards on 126 carries, with an average of 4.4 yards per carry, and eight rushing touchdowns so far this season. He also has 87 receiving yards on 13 receptions.
That’s a lot for Georgia’s unsteady run defense to handle, which is exactly why Smart isn’t thinking about Franklin right now.
