Matt LaFleur shares Packers injury updates, revealing a mixed bag of promising news and concerning developments
MarShawn Lloyd, Devonte Wyatt, Zach Tom, and Collin Oliver are all treating injuries, and their health could offer a big boost to the Packers’ roster down the stretch.
The bye week has gone, and now the Green Bay Packers have to handle a tough sequence of games without much time to rest. The team beat the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, and now it’s already preparing for a road game against the Arizona Cardinals.
As part of that, the roster has to live with multiple injuries, from varying degrees of severity and players’ importance to the games’ outcomes.
On Wednesday, head coach Matt LaFleur talked about some of the injured players before the first practice of the week ahead of the Cardinals game, with a mixed bag of good and bad.
RB MarShawn Lloyd (hamstring)
“He’s getting closer, I would say,” LaFleur said. The running back started the regular season on injured reserve with a hamstring injury that he suffered in the preseason. While it’s uncommon for soft-tissue injuries to take so long to recover, Lloyd has had a long track record of injuries in the NFL, so it’s fair to give him time to fully recover before getting back to the field. LaFleur added that Lloyd will not return to practice this week, though.
DT Devonte Wyatt (knee)
This is a big one, because the defense has been materially worse without Wyatt on the field since he hurt his knee against the Cowboys in Week 4. And now, the update is a positive one. He won’t practice on Wednesday, but it’s possible that he gets back at some point sooner rather than later.
“He’s getting closer,” LaFleur said. “He won’t go [Wednesday], but we’ll give him the week.”
RT Zach Tom (oblique)
This is a tough one, because Tom has handled this significant injury since Week 1. He tried to get back in Week 3, but got out of the game after one snap. Tom did play every offensive snap against the Bengals, but revealed after the game that he forgot parts of the second half due to an intense pain. It’s still possible that Tom plays through it, albeit it would be under limited practice reps.
“It could change, but we’re not anticipating him going [Wednesday],” LaFleur explained. “I did talk to him this morning, and he’s feeling better.”
EDGE Collin Oliver (hamstring)
Oliver has missed the entire training camp on the physically unable to perform list due to a serious hamstring injury. The fifth-round rookie is already eligible to return from PUP now, but LaFleur didn’t sound as promising.
“I’d say that’s up in the air,” the head coach said. “But we’re working toward that for sure.”
