The Tennessee Volunteers laid an egg on Saturday night at Bryant Denny Stadium, falling to the Alabama Crimson Tide 37-20. There are a litany of reasons that Tennessee lost, and many of them fall squarely on themselves.

That specifically includes the defensive side of the ball, where Tim Banks’ group looks less and less like the 2024 standout group by the week. This time around, an inability to get off the field on third down, a mostly listless pass rush, and poor tackling doomed Tennessee against their chief rival.

Regarding that last point, a bad effort in the second half on an Alabama touchdown appears to have irked one notable member of the defense. Cornerback Ty Redmond’s tackle attempt on Alabama WR Rico Scott was, let’s say, lacking, and DE Tyre West let him know about it immediately afterwards.

Tennessee DE Tyre West appeared to say something to CB Ty Redmond for a missed tackle

With Tennessee down 23-13 in the third quarter, Ty Simpson flipped a pass to Rico Scott, who cut outside and up the field towards the corner of the end zone. Redmond met Scott a few yards ahead of the goal line and kind of shoulder checked him. That was ineffective, and Scott bounced off the tackle attempt and made it across the goal line for the touchdown that largely took any remaining doubt out of the game.

As Redmond stood there and Alabama celebrated, West came up to Redmond and appeared to lightly shove his shoulder while saying something to him.

It’s a bit of a tough situation, as you want players to have accountability to their team and their teammates when they make a mistake. But often times you want to handle those moments of accountability on the sideline and out of the viewing public’s eye to some degree.

In any event, while it was a poor tackle attempt, it was one of many things on a list a CVS receipt long as to why Tennessee lost on Saturday night. There won’t be a shortage of things to clean up as they get ready to turn their attention to another night road game next weekend against Kentucky.
